Market Extra: What is a stock-trading halt and why do exchanges order them?

Shares of Silicon Valley Bank parent SVB Financial Group were halted shortly after markets opened on Friday and never reopened. Back in January, shares of nearly 200 securities were halted because of a glitch on the New York Stock Exchange.
