: Dow, S&P 500 gains belie bad market breadth

The Big 3 stock market indexes are all rising, but market internals are showing that the market of stocks is actually declining, led by smaller capitalization stocks. The number of declining stocks is outnumbering advancers by 1,859 to 1,059 on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and by 2,762 to 1,377 on the Nasdaq exchange. And volume in declining stocks made up 61.3% of total volume on the Big Board and 58.2% of total volume on the Nasdaq. Meanwhile, the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA was up 19 points, or 0.1%, with 14 of 30 components gaining ground in afternoon, and the S&P 500 SPX and the Nasdaq Composite COMP were also both up 0.1%. The Russell 2000 of small-cap stocks RUT was dropping 1.7%.
