A CSX Corp. CSX train derailed in West Virginia early Wednesday. The empty coal train struck a rockslide in Sandstone, W. Va, at 4:51 a.m., causing it to derail, CSX said, in a statement. “Preliminary information indicates that all four of the train’s locomotives and nine empty coal cars derailed,” the company added, noting that the lead locomotive had three crew members on board. “The locomotive caught fire, but all three crew members are safe and being evaluated and treated for non-life threatening injuries,” the company said. An unknown quantity of diesel fuel and oil spilled from the derailed locomotives, according to CSX, which says that environmental measures will be deployed in the New River for containment. There were no hazardous materials being transported by this train and the incident posed no danger to the public, the company added. Train derailments are in the spotlight at the moment following last month’s derailment of a Norfolk Southern Corp. NSC train carrying hazardous materials on the outskirts of East Palestine, Ohio. CSX shares rose 1.7% Wednesday.
