House to hold ninth vote for speaker, matching the number of ballots needed in 1923

A ninth round of voting for speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives looked set to start Thursday after the chamber failed to select a speaker in votes held earlier in the day and in the prior two days. Republican Rep. Troy Nehls of Texas was giving a speech to nominate top House Republican Kevin McCarthy, who keeps running into opposition from too many fellow GOP lawmakers in his push to become speaker. The House must kick off the new congressional session with the election of a speaker, and it’s required to keep voting until one is chosen. It last needed nine rounds of voting for a speaker election in 1923.
