Ebay Inc. announced an expansion of its “Authenticity Guarantee” to trading cards sold for $2,000 or more. Through a partnership with Professional Sports Authenticator that launches on Monday, eBay will begin verifying that cards meet the listing description, haven’t had their sealed plastic holders tampered with, and aren’t counterfeit. The program will ultimately expand to cards sold for $250 or more. Four months ago, eBay launched the authentication program for raw trading cards, and 54 million have been graded to date. The “Authenticity Guarantee” service is also in place for sneakers sold for $100 or more, watches sold for $2,000 or more, and handbags sold for $500 or more. Certified Collectibles Group will continue to authenticate single, ungraded trading cards sold for $250 or more. Ebay stock has slumped 21.6% for the year to date.
