Dow transports dive to buck broad-market rally

The Dow Jones Transportation Average is taking a 229-point, or 1.5% dive, in afternoon trading, with 18 of 20 components trading lower, despite the rallies in the broader stock market indexes. Leading the transports lower, shares of trucker Old Dominion Freight Inc. sank 5.1%, marine shipping company Matson Inc. shed 4.9%, air carrier American Airlines Group Inc. dropped 1.9% and railroad operator Norfolk Southern Corp. was down 1.9%. For the two gainers, shares of car rental company Avis Budget Group Inc. advanced 2.8% and diesel engine maker Kirby Corp. tacked on 0.6%. Meanwhile, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 23 points, or 0.1%, while the S&P 500 rose 0.7% and the Nasdaq Composite climbed 1.8%.
